The Badness of Death for Animals

How bad is death (itself, rather than the process of dying) for non-human animals? The most common answers to this question, even by many animal liberationists, are either “not at all” or “much less bad than it is for humans”. Both of those answers, I shall argue, are unsustainable. Once we understand the various reasons why death is bad for humans, we must reach the conclusion that while death is not equally bad for all, how bad it is does not neatly track the human/non-human divide. Nor does one need to be a “person” for death to be very bad. Thus, death is much worse for many animals than most people think.
