Wibren van der Burg

Visiting Fellow, 2011

Wibren van der Burg is on sabbatical at the Centre for Ethics until June. He is professor of Legal Philosophy at Erasmus University Rotterdam. The central theme of his research is the interaction between law, ethics and society. A second theme is how law, politics and morality should deal with the dynamics of cultural and religious pluralism, with a special focus on the ideals of state neutrality and the separation of state and church. He is co-editor of four books in English: The Importance of Ideals (2004), Rediscovering Fuller (1999), Reflective Equilibrium (1998), and Nation, State and the Coexistence of Different Minorities (1995), and wrote and co-edited eight books in Dutch. He published in journals such as Ethics, Bioethics, and Law and Philosophy. While at the Centre, he will mainly do research for his book with the working title The Dynamics of Law and Morality. In this book he develops an interactionist theory of the relation between law and morality, building on authors such as Lon Fuller, Philip Selznick and Ronald Dworkin. On March 14, he will present a paper on state neutrality (with Roland Pierik) at the Centre for Ethics.
