Pierre-Yves Néron

Postdoctoral Fellow, 2007-09 | Department of Philosophy

Ph. D., Department of Philosophy, Université de Montréal.

Pierre-Yves Neron’s research focuses on business ethics. His doctoral dissertation title is: “Responsabilité et marché” propositions pour une philosophie politique du commerce”. Néron combines approaches from theoretical and applied ethics, economics, and contemporary political philosophy in grappling with questions of distributive justice, the role of the state, and of transnational regulatory bodies in shaping market structures, and corporate social responsibility. Some of his work provocatively challenges the concept of “corporate citizenship” as potentially corrupting both of standards of corporate responsibility and of democratic citizenship.

Néron’s publications include: “Citizenship Inc.: Do We Really Want Businesses to Be Good Corporate Citizens?” (with Wayne Norman), Business Ethics Quarterly (2008), “Corporations as Citizens: Political not Metaphorical, a reply to critics” (with Wayne Norman), Business Ethics Quarterly (2008). Néron has taught introductory ethics at the Université de Montréal. He is currently teaching “Issues in Business Ethics: Business and Government” at the University of Toronto. Néron has presented his scholarly work in conferences and workshops in Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, and France. His postdoctoral research project is titled, “Business ethics beyond classical paradigms: corporations as political actor”.

Néron’s doctorate is from the Department of Philosophy, Université de Montréal.
