Mathias Thaler

Postdoctoral Research Fellow, 2006-07

Postdoctoral Fellow, Institute of European Integration Research, Austrian Academy of Sciences.

Mathias Thaler is presently interested in a critical reconstruction of normative political theory. More specifically he focuses on recent debates about international justice that expose problematic aspects of the predominant liberal discourse: debates about humanitarian intervention, human rights and cosmopolitanism.

Since 1999 Thaler has been serving as an editor for the first scientific journal in German that is exclusively devoted to intercultural philosophy: “polylog. Zeitschrift fér interkulturelles Philosophieren”. He is currently preparing an issue on just war theory from an intercultural perspective; furthermore he is working on a book manuscript based on his dissertation.

Thaler received his PhD (Philosophy) from Vienna University (Austria) in 2006. As an undergraduate he conducted research at the Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales (Paris). During his doctoral studies Thaler was a Junior Visiting Fellow at the Institute of Human Sciences in Vienna (2004) and a Visiting Scholar at UC Berkeley’s Institute of European Studies (2005). Before coming to Toronto he was a tutor in Philosophy at Vienna University. Thaler earned scholarships from the Austrian Ministry of Science, Education and Culture, the Austrian Marshall Plan Fund and the Austrian Academy of Sciences.
