Law, Urbanity and Justice Research Group

Group Description:

This research group brings together academics and graduate students working on urban issues from a variety of disciplines such as philosophy, economics, political science, geography, law, public policy, etc. We will study and criticize cutting-edge scholarly works concerning normative, theoretical, critical, and empirical aspects of urban planning and development and distribution of means and resources which have a spatial dimension.

This research group will examine the social, legal, and political forces that shape the urban context. It will provide a platform to study classical as well as contemporary and critical analyses of distributive justice in the urban sphere.

Our meetings will offer an opportunity to interact with other scholars who work in different methodologies, to share ideas, and to foster new joint projects.

Group Format:

The group will maintain regular meetings at the University of Toronto St. George Campus (Larkin Building), on Wednesdays (12-2pm).

Light lunch will be served.

The inaugural meeting of the group will take place on October 7, 2015, 12:00pm to 2:00pm, in Room 200, Larkin Building, 15 Devonshire Place.

The meetings will be formatted in one of three streams:

  • reading and discussion of influential new (or classical) researches on urbanity (members of the group will have the opportunity to suggest and lead such a discussion);
  • presentation of works-in-progress by members of the group;
  • hosting invited talks by leading scholars (1-2 a year)
